Shadow and Hightlight
Adobe Photoshop CS2 : Alternative to Brightness and Contrast

Fig 1

This tutorial is to show you a new way to brighten up dark images with more control
than using Brightness / Contrast.

1. Open your image in PS CS2. The image I will be using can be seen in Fig 1. Click on it for full size.

2. Click IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > SHADOW/HIGHLIGHT

3. Use the settings I have [here]. OR save the SHH file here to load into CS2.
Play with the settings to get your image looking good.

Fig 2

Your image should look similar to Fig 2, if you used my image and followed the instructions.

You might be asking.. what is the difference doing it this way and Brightness / Contrast?
The answer is color. When you use Brightness and Contrast your image turns more white when brightening and black when darkening.

Below is a comparison.
Notice how the sky on the left is blue and sky on the right is almost white.
This is not to say you couldn't touch up the Shadow / Highlight image evern more with Brightness / Contrast afterwards.

Another advantage is the amount of control, if you play around with the settings, you'll see what I mean.
